Our Story

The Beaufort Family Health Society was formed in 2022, in response to the absence of primary care services in Cumberland.

The Society received tremendous community support to ensure a primary health care model was developed that ensures the long-term sustainability of primary health care services in the community.

As a result of the leadership from the Village of Cumberland, MLA Josie Osbourne, Ministry of Health, Comox Valley Primary Care Network, Island Health and the founding volunteer Board of Directors, we brought primary care to Cumberland.

The Society opened Cumberland Village Health Care in September 2023 and will build up to a panel of approximately 5,000 patients over three years. The clinic hosts an interdisciplinary team of primary and allied health providers working together to deliver team-based care.

The Society is now broadening its scope to assess the wider health and wellness needs of the community to understand how and where we might continue to make a positive impact in the community.

Community Led Healthcare

Our small but mighty board of volunteer community members, along with the support from our stakeholders including the Comox Valley Primary Care Network, the Ministry of Health and Island Health, built a new model of community-led healthcare in our community.

Cumberland has a long history of grass-roots, community-led organizations that help to make our community as unique as where we live and the people who live here. This organization is another example of that strong desire to own our community assets and make decisions that benefit the community for the long term.

Accessible healthcare is a cornerstone for a sustainable, healthy community.

Our community is evolving and our organization is evolving along with it. The community voice within our board and membership guides and focuses us on what is needed today and in the future.

10 Things We Care Deeply About

Our Strategic Plan and values are influenced by these ten guiding principles.

  1. Community-Centered Care – Every decision and service prioritizes the health and well-being of the community, ensuring care is accessible, responsive, and inclusive.

  2. Equity & Inclusion – Everyone deserves high-quality healthcare, regardless of socioeconomic status, background, or ability. Services must be designed to reduce barriers and disparities in health access.

  3. Holistic Well-Being – True health goes beyond medical care; it includes mental, emotional, social, and environmental factors that influence overall well-being.

  4. Collaboration & Partnerships – Working with local organizations, community leaders, and social services strengthens collective impact and ensures a network of support for community members.

  5. Prevention & Education – Empowering individuals with knowledge and resources helps prevent illness, promote self-care, and build a healthier future.

  6. Respect & Dignity – Every individual deserves compassionate, person-centred care that values their unique experiences, preferences, and autonomy.

  7. Accountability & Transparency – Ethical governance, responsible decision-making, and open communication ensure trust between the organization, the community, and stakeholders.

  8. Sustainability & Resilience – Services should be designed for long-term viability, ensuring that the clinic and its programs continue to serve future generations.

  9. Innovation & Adaptability – Healthcare must evolve to meet changing community needs, leveraging new practices, technology, and interdisciplinary approaches.

  10. Cultural Safety & Humility – A commitment to learning, listening, and responding to diverse cultural and community needs ensures healthcare is respectful, relevant, and meaningful for all.
